Labor Day Signals the End of Summer and the Beginning of Autumn…
(For the most complete experience, read this on the website. Many email providers remove important details such as the images.)
There’s already a shift in the air: The sun’s rays are making their way south, and the temperatures have dropped from triple digits into a lovely sixty-seven degrees to mid-eighties. It’s lovely. Yet, it’s also kind of sad to see the days grow shorter and darker in the Northern Hemisphere. Labor Day is the weekend when Americans squeeze in the last bits of summer fun, and acquiese to the change of seasons.
As I think about the Labor Day holiday in the States, I am reminded of my own personal stories of struggling (laboring) to survive during a time when women were confined to certain expectations of employment. Most of the available jobs were menial, and the pay was abyssmal. Women could work in a secretarial pool, could wait tables, find employment as nurses and as teachers, and women could work as beauticians provided they got the professional training, They could iron or wash others’ clothing, and maybe even babysit. But few jobs paid enough to support a family.
I had come from a lineage of strong women who worked outside the home as far back as I can trace history, But as a single mother of three younsters under the age of four when I first became single, I knew I had to find a job that paid for daycare, food and shelter and clothing and medical and….
Nothing but blind faith led the way, and somehow we got by. We got by because I entered the realm of “traditional men’s work” when I became trained as a Teamster Truck Driver (thank YOU Affirmative Action). I earned more as a Teamster than did any of my friends, including the males. Life was good. I owe it all to the unions!

Yep. That’s really me in the hard hat. You can’t tell from this old black and white photo, but the hat is pink. It was special. The experience taught me a lot, mostly about my own inner strength, and I learned way too much about sexual harrassment and male-female interactions, but we’ll leave those stories for another time… The biggest lesson is that women are more powerful than they realize. And I’m not just referring to physical strength, because mindset is the greatest tool we can have in our self-worth toolbox. This experience gave me more self-esteem than anything I had ever done previously.
At any rate, today is also September 1st, as I write this, and September is filled with a lot of exciting events.
September 1: Labor Day/Last vestiges of summer in the Northern Hemisphere and because it’s the first day of a new month, it’s a day to blow a bit of cinnamon through your front door into your house, affirming that abundance enter your home. (Yes, I actually do this on the first of every month, and it seems that I have much for which to be grateful, so I keep it up.)
September 7-8: Blood Moon total lunar eclipse (Nothing to fear here, but very cool!)
September 26: I travel to Boston..and Salem…
Okay that last bit was just to let you know that I will be shuttering the coaching availability from September 26th thru the first week in October. The calendar is closed while I re-charge my batteries with a little mini-vacation. No doubt there will be pictures of my trip in the near future….
Until then, I am available for a handful of Breakthrough in a Blink sessions during the first three weeks in September. (Click the hyperlink to learn more and apply.)
Happy Labor Day if you’re in the States!
