Women’s History Month Spotlight on Ruth Bader Ginsburg: A Legacy of Relentless Justice
March 15, 1933 – September 18, 2020
“Fight for the things that you care about, but do it in a way that will lead others to join you.” – Ruth Bader Ginsburg
Ruth Bader Ginsburg wasn’t just a Supreme Court Justice—she was a warrior for justice, a champion for gender equality, and a trailblazer who changed the course of history with her intellect, perseverance, and unwavering belief in fairness. On a personal note, as an author, I appreciate the number of copyright cases that were heard by Ginsburg. Her life is a legacy, and as a woman, I am also especially grateful for her time spent as director of the ACLU Women’s Rights Project.
At a time when women were expected to remain in the shadows, she stepped into the light. She graduated at the top of her law class—while raising a child. She faced rejection from law firms that refused to hire women—so she rewrote the laws that held women back. And when she finally took her seat on the U.S. Supreme Court in 1993, she became a voice for the unheard.
Dismantling the Patriarchy for Everyone
Justice Ginsburg understood that equality wasn’t just a women’s issue—it was a human issue. She knew that dismantling patriarchy was essential for all people to have the freedom to thrive, regardless of gender.
This certainty shaped her groundbreaking legal strategy during her eight years as director of the ACLU Women’s Rights Project, which she co-founded with Brenda Feigen in 1972. She took on cases that proved gender discrimination hurt both women and men, and her work set the foundation for many of the rights we take for granted today.
Why Ruth Bader Ginsburg Inspires Us Today
Justice Ginsburg didn’t just fight for herself—she fought for all of us. She argued cases that dismantled gender discrimination, opened doors for women, and challenged outdated laws that restricted equality.
She knew that true leadership isn’t just about winning battles—it’s about bringing others along with you. Her words remind us that change isn’t just about pushing forward alone—it’s about inspiring others to rise with you.
